Day
33 (February 9, 2000)
This little
guy was just hanging around on a tree near the parking lot where
we gathered for the morning jungle walk at Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary
in Kerala. He really does have blue-lavendar fur, and he really
is just flattened out on the tree trunk calmly eating a nut while
we tourists are excitedly clicking away. I never did get from our
guide what his species is. The guides here are tribal people from
this area, and are here simply to keep us from getting in trouble
with elephants, cobras, wild dogs, etc. They don't speak English
very well. We ended up seeing quite a few animals, but again, the
elephants eluded us. We heard them, saw lots of dung, and lots of
crunched areas they'd ripped up, but they can move silently when
they want to and they decided that they didn't want to be seen this
morning. We did see wild boar, sambar deer, a read-headed iguana,
lots of monkeys, and other animals. Came back to the guesthouse
to shower off and picked five leeches from my ankles. Blick. If
you go, bring thick socks!
