Food!
South Indian
cuisine is mostly vegetarian, though at seaside resorts fish is
plentiful and good. Thali is a midday meal served on a banana leaf
freshly washed by the diner. A big spoonful of rice is plopped down
in the middle, followed by various sauces and vegetable mixtures
which are placed in small piles around the rice. Your job is to
mix it up with your hands and get it to your mouth without making
a mess. The left hand stays out the picture. You may ask for a spoon.
