Daily Sunset Journal

Day 25 (February 1, 2000)

Kanyakumari is the name of the city at Cape Comorin, the tip end of India. I experienced the sunset ritual with busloads of Indian pilgrims who'd come as part of a spiritual journey. They live next to the bus. The men knead dough for chipatis and someone stirs a big aluminum pot of dahl. They lay mats down on the ground and sleep. This sunset is special, where the seas meet: the Arabian, the Bengal, and the Indian. It is considered a sacred place, especially since Gandhi's ashes were ensconced in the memorial there, before they were scattered at sea. The woman in the photo above was part of a large group of such people intensely watching the sun set. I was impressed by the general feeling of spiritual commitment, which I think shows in her face.
