A Kolam during Pongol, the Harvest Festival

During the week of the Pongol (harvest) festival the women in Tamil Nadu create traditional rice-flour designs in front of their doorsteps called kolams, to create an especially sacred space around their homes. Creating a kolam is an act of giving, since it is beautiful and it can be eaten by insects. It has the additional benefit of attracting the goddess of prosperity (Lakshimi) into the home. In other South Indian cultures this piece of art is called "rangoli." I took photos of the best 50 of them!
