Mamallapuram (Mahabalipuram)

Highlights: Shore Temple, Rock Carvers, Pongol Festival

Dates: January, 18 - 20, 2000

Travelogue: to be linked here when ready.

A little background: The Shore Temple here is the second most photographed monument in all of India, and attracts Indian and foreign travelers alike. It has become a bit of a hippie hangout, and one is as likely to see dreadlocks as the flower-adorned hair of local women.

Mamallapuram is also famous for its stone carvers, and one can hear the constant tink-tink of their trade throughout the day as they work on 10 foot high Shivas or 2 inch high Shaktis.

The capital of the Pallava kings of Kanchipuram, the village has its roots in the 5th to 8th centuries, and most of the sights were created during that time. An agricultural area, it is very interesing to be here during the yearly harvest (Pongol) festival.
