Goa

Highlights: Beaches, friends, parties, and more beaches, friends, and parties.

Dates: February, 2000

Travelogue: This area will be linked to live dispatches when available

A little background: Goa is blessed with the best beaches in India and a lot of my friends from San Francisco who first discovered it in the roaring 60's when it was on the famous Asia hashish trail. A few actually still have homes there to visit in the cool season (which is anything but cool) between November and March each year. "It's not India," they say. It's an international community of free spirits looking for a little hassle-free R&R.

Perhaps hassle-free no more. The grand new year's eve party preparations were destroyed by local thugs and, some say, officials who didn't receive the proper bakshesh. The partiers scattered, my friend Goa Gil ended up spinning at a disco club on the hillside - a venue so last minute there were none of the requisite florescent banners, blacklights, statues, and flowers that this group normally carefully and lovingly decorates the environment. But there was music and friends to bring in the new year, backed by a palm-fringed beach on the Arabian Sea. Sounds like a good party to me!

An excursion from Goa to Hampi is planned in February. Barring difficulties, I will join them.
